Happiness wasn’t something Simon really thought about most of his life. He didn’t have time for it, not really. He had responsibilities and goals, and to him, those equaled happiness. How could he be happy if he didn’t have the things he wanted? What he’d wanted had been his career, more than a person or love so he’d always seen himself as happy.
And maybe he had been in some ways, but as he sat behind the steering wheel, driving to Golden Gate Park, he realized he hadn’t had a clue.

He was excited. He felt...light. Simon wasn’t really sure exactly what the change was. Maybe it had been seeing Heather accept Trevor, or being back in the city. The possibility of what this surgery could give him, seeing his old colleagues, or maybe a combination of all of that.
All he knew was that he’d felt like shit when he’d hurt Trevor at dinner, but he’d felt better after they spoke in the room last night. When the hospital called early this morning about a problem with some equipment and stating that they had to postpone the surgery a day, he should have felt frustrated, but he didn’t. Simon felt possibility.
Yesterday hadn’t gone how he’d hoped it would, and he wanted to make up for that. He just wanted to try and relax...with Trevor. When did he ever let himself truly relax? Even when he wasn’t working, his mind was always going, always on his hand and his career.
It would be back there tomorrow. He had no doubt about that. This was his chance, his shot to get that part of his life back. But today, he had some living to do, too, and he wanted to do it with the man beside him. The man who made him...happy.
“Have you ever been to Golden Gate Park?” Simon asked Trevor when they pulled into the parking garage. There were probably better things he could have taken Trevor to do today, but he also just wanted to hang out. Being here made that possible.
“Nope. I used to only come to San Francisco to buy better drugs, and to hit up better clubs. All I did here was party.” He had a tinge of regret in his voice.
Simon reached over and squeezed Trevor’s leg. “Not anymore.”
“Nope. Not anymore.” Trevor rolled his chip around in his hand before shoving it into his pocket. It was security a to him, Simon realized. He’d considered asking to see it numerous times but hadn’t, and Trevor never offered.
“What are we going to do first?” Trevor asked as they made their way out of the garage.
Simon knew what he wanted to do, and knew it was slightly ridiculous at the same time.
“You look unsure about something. What are you embarrassed about?” Trevor nudged him.
“You’ll have to remember how my mind works.” He was stalling. He couldn’t believe he was really stalling.
